Taiwan charges Tokyo Electron’s Taiwan unit with stealing chip secrets, first corporate case under national security law.
Taiwanese prosecutors have charged Tokyo Electron’s Taiwan unit with violating the National Security Act and Trade Secrets Act, marking the first corporate indictment under Taiwan’s National Security Act for alleged trade secret theft.
The case stems from the August indictment of a former TSMC employee accused of stealing secrets to help Tokyo Electron win contracts for TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometer chip technology.
Prosecutors say the company failed to implement adequate safeguards despite having general internal rules.
If convicted, the unit could face fines up to NT$120 million ($3.8 million).
Tokyo Electron has not confirmed organizational involvement and did not comment.
The case highlights growing scrutiny over intellectual property protection in Taiwan’s vital semiconductor sector.
