South Africa’s Competition Commission has referred eight major shipping firms, including Maersk, to the Competition Tribunal over allegations of a decade-long price-fixing cartel from 2008 to 2018.
The companies are accused of coordinating identical General Rate Increases on trade routes between South Africa and Asia, and South Africa and West Africa, artificially inflating shipping costs.
The move aims to lower import prices and boost export competitiveness.
The case follows Maersk’s failed legal challenge to Transnet’s decision to award a 25-year Durban port concession to the Philippines-based ICTSI, which the high court upheld in October.
