Northumbria University awarded honorary Doctor of Civil Law degrees to Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe and defender Dan Burn on December 2, 2025, recognizing their roles in the club’s historic Carabao Cup win—the first domestic trophy in 70 years—and their community work through the Newcastle United Foundation.
The ceremony, moved to St James’ Park ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby, honored Howe and Burn for their leadership and impact beyond football, including mental health initiatives reaching nearly 70,000 people annually.
Former Sunderland chairman Sir Bob Murray and other public figures also received the honor during the university’s winter graduation events.
