A New Zealand kiwifruit packhouse halted a conveyor system after a worker was critically injured cleaning it, prompting a safety ban and required upgrades.
WorkSafe New Zealand has banned the use of a kiwifruit conveyor system at Riverlock’s Ōpōtiki packhouse after a female worker was critically injured on November 24 while cleaning the partially operating machine.
The worker, a long-time employee, was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in critical condition but later discharged and returned home.
WorkSafe inspectors, who visited on November 28, required the family-owned company to hire an expert to assess and fix machine guarding issues before the system can be used again.
Riverlock has engaged an engineer and expects to complete the upgrades within months.
WorkSafe emphasized that machinery-related incidents are a common cause of serious harm in manufacturing, and follow-up inspections will verify compliance.
The incident marked the company’s first serious injury in decades.
