Merafe Resources and Glencore will close two South African ferrochrome smelters by Dec. 9 unless the government acts, risking over 2,400 direct jobs.
Merafe Resources, in a joint venture with Glencore, plans to close its Boshoek and Wonderkop ferrochrome smelters in South Africa by December 9 unless the government provides a viable solution by then, citing Eskom’s proposed electricity tariffs as unviable for long-term operations.
The move will result in over 2,400 direct job losses and up to 17,000 indirect jobs, with the Lion smelter remaining operational.
The closures follow years of rising energy costs, production declines, and repeated shutdowns due to power shortages and uncompetitive tariffs.
Despite a recent tariff proposal that supports only the Lion smelter, the joint venture says no sustainable solution exists for the other two facilities, prompting retrenchment notices and voluntary severance packages effective December 1.
The decision underscores ongoing struggles in South Africa’s ferrochrome sector, which produces about one-fifth of global output but faces challenges from high electricity prices and declining competitiveness.
