A man was arrested for obstructing police after 820 kg of stolen, culturally significant pounamu was seized in Dunedin.
A 29-year-old man was arrested and charged with obstruction after Dunedin police seized 820 kilograms of stolen pounamu, including cut samples intended for sale, during a search on December 1, 2025.
The pounamu, culturally significant to Ngāi Tahu, was traced to remote West Coast catchments and is protected under the Pounamu (Ngāi Tahu) Vesting Act 1997.
Public collection is limited to West Coast beaches or rivers with permits from kaitiaki rūnanga, and all pounamu can be traced like DNA.
Authorities urge carvers to verify provenance through Ngāi Tahu Pounamu and the public to report suspicious activity via 111, 105, or Crime Stoppers.
The suspect was released on bail, with further charges pending.
