A man sentenced to 40 years for killing gay Ole Miss student Jay Lee in 2022, whose body was found in 2025.
Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., 25, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2022 second-degree murder of University of Mississippi student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, 20, a gay man and LGBTQ+ advocate.
Herrington, an Ole Miss graduate, pleaded guilty to avoid a capital murder charge.
His sentence includes 30 years to serve, 10 years suspended, plus 10 years for tampering, followed by 10 years of post-release supervision.
Lee’s remains were found in February 2025 by deer hunters, about 2.5 years after he vanished.
Prosecutors say the killing followed a secret relationship.
Lee’s mother, Stephanie Lee, spoke at a press conference, and her husband plans to push for legislation requiring tech companies to provide login data for missing persons under 21.
