$12M in grants fund 36 projects to restore Long Island Sound’s water quality and habitats.
Nearly $12 million in federal and private grants are funding 36 restoration projects across five states to improve water quality and restore habitats in the Long Island Sound watershed.
The funding, from the Long Island Sound Futures Fund and supported by the EPA, Connecticut, New York, and other partners, will reduce stormwater runoff, prevent thousands of pounds of nitrogen pollution, remove marine debris, and restore over 70 acres of coastal habitat.
Projects include eelgrass and tidal marsh restoration, fish passage improvements, and community engagement initiatives.
Despite federal funding cuts elsewhere, the Long Island Sound program’s budget has risen to $40 million, with total conservation impact exceeding $20 million when matching funds are included.
