A jihadist insurgency in northern Mozambique has displaced nearly 300,000 people since July, with almost 100,000 fleeing in just two weeks, the UNHCR reported on December 2, 2025.
Violence has spread into previously safe areas, including Nampula province, as armed groups attack villages at night, burn homes, and force civilians to flee with little warning.

UNHCR representative Xavier Creach said humanitarian efforts are struggling to meet growing needs, calling for urgent international support as the actual number of displaced may exceed 300,000.
