An Indian man sentenced to 2 years for stealing $1.17M from Medicare by billing for fake COVID and respiratory tests.
A 35-year-old Indian national, Mohammad Asif, was sentenced to two years in prison for a Medicare fraud scheme that stole over $1.17 million by falsely billing for unperformed COVID-19 and respiratory tests through his defunct lab, American Labworks LLC, in Everett, Washington.
He pleaded guilty in September 2025 to conspiracy to commit health care fraud, after billing Medicare more than $8.7 million between April and December 2024 and receiving over $1.1 million in payments.
The lab submitted claims for tests never ordered or performed, including those for deceased patients, prompting over 200 complaints.
Asif withdrew $260,000 in May 2024, traveled to India, and returned to the U.S. in March 2025 before being arrested at Chicago O’Hare Airport in April.
U.S. District Judge James L. Robart condemned the fraud as a theft from vulnerable populations, and Asif has been ordered to pay full restitution and will be deported after serving his sentence.
The investigation into his co-conspirators continues.
