China’s zero-tariff policy, effective December 1, 2024, has boosted Ugandan coffee exports, which surged 190% in March 2025, making China Uganda’s second-largest coffee market in Asia.
The policy grants duty-free access to all products from 53 African nations with diplomatic ties to China.
Ugandan exporters secured $3 million in deals at the China International Import Expo, including a memorandum with Cotti Coffee, a major Chinese chain, to link farmers directly to Chinese consumers.
To meet China’s quality standards, over 40 Ugandan staff have been trained in China, with another 40 set to follow.
Coffee supports about 1.8 million households in Uganda.
