Australia fines Southern Phone $2.5M for failing to stop mobile scams, causing $393K in losses.
Southern Phone Company Limited has been fined $2.5 million, the maximum allowed, by Australia’s ACMA for failing to protect customers from mobile fraud.
Between July 2024 and February 2025, the telco violated anti-scam laws 168 times, enabling scammers to hijack mobile numbers and access bank accounts, causing at least $393,000 in losses for 20 customers.
The security flaws went undetected for over a year.
The penalty is the highest ever issued by ACMA for such breaches.
Southern Phone must now conduct an independent review, perform regular security tests, and report to regulators.
This is the third enforcement action this year targeting telco number porting vulnerabilities, highlighting a persistent scam threat.
