Wohl and Burkman got probation for fake robocalls threatening Black Detroit voters with arrest if they voted by mail.
Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman were sentenced to one year of probation in Michigan for orchestrating a 2020 robocall campaign that falsely warned Black voters in Detroit they could face police scrutiny, debt collection, or government overreach if they voted by mail. The calls, targeting predominantly Democratic urban areas, used racially charged language and were part of a broader multi-state effort. They pleaded no contest to voter intimidation, conspiracy, and computer crimes, abandoning free speech defenses. As part of their sentence, they must complete 500 hours of voter registration work in Ohio and pay up to $1.25 million in a New York lawsuit settlement. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel called the scheme a deliberate attempt to suppress voting rights.
