WA retail workers faced over 680 violent incidents last year, with new protective laws delayed until Dec 2025.
Retail workers in Western Australia faced over 680 incidents of violence or aggression last year, including a recent store lockdown due to vandalism and intimidation.
Although the state government pledged new retail barring laws—modeled on ACT legislation—to allow court-issued bans on repeat offenders, the laws won’t be enacted before December 2025, leaving workers unprotected during the Christmas season.
The proposed laws would let store owners seek orders based on evidence of past misconduct and future risk, with magistrates able to tailor exceptions for essential services.
Breaching an order could lead to up to five years in prison.
While welcomed in principle, the delay drew criticism from opposition leaders and unions, with Attorney General Tony Buti stressing that laws alone can’t solve deeper societal issues but are a necessary step in protecting workers.
