The Thomson and Weston families bought the HBC’s 1670 royal charter for $18M and will donate it to Canadian museums with $5M in conservation funds.
The Thomson and Weston families have secured the Hudson’s Bay Company’s 1670 royal charter in an uncontested $18 million bid, with no competing offers submitted.
The historic document, signed by King Charles II and granting the company control over vast Canadian territory, will be donated to four major Canadian institutions—Archives of Manitoba, Manitoba Museum, Canadian Museum of History, and Royal Ontario Museum—for shared public display.
The families also pledged $5 million for conservation and education, with additional support from the Desmarais family, Power Corp., and the Hennick Family Foundation.
The charter, one of Canada’s oldest surviving documents, will first be displayed in Winnipeg, where HBC was originally based.
Final approval from Ontario’s Superior Court is still required.
