Texas Rep. Gary VanDeaver won’t run for reelection in 2026, ending his tenure after 12 years.
Texas Representative Gary VanDeaver, who has served House District 1 since 2014, announced on December 1, 2025, he will not seek reelection in 2026.
A retired educator and former school administrator, VanDeaver chaired the public health committee during the 2025 session and focused on rural healthcare.
He gained attention for opposing a $1 billion private school voucher program, one of only two Republicans to do so, and was among five lawmakers censured by the Texas GOP for defying party leadership.
Two Republicans, Chris Spencer and Josh Bray, have launched campaigns to succeed him.
The candidate filing deadline is December 8, 2025.
VanDeaver will complete his term through January 2027.
