Supreme Court grants bail to man accused of impersonating Amit Shah’s nephew to defraud ₹3.9 crore, citing excessive detention and trial delays.
The Supreme Court has granted bail to Ajay Kumar Nayyar, accused of impersonating Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s nephew to defraud a businessman of ₹3.9 crore.
The court noted Nayyar had spent over four years in custody despite the maximum penalty for the charges being seven years, and only one of 34 prosecution witnesses had been cross-examined.
The bench emphasized the trial’s prolonged delays and the disproportionate nature of continued detention, even though lower courts had denied bail due to the fraud’s seriousness and potential for additional charges.
Nayyar will be released under travel and witness-contact restrictions to allow the trial to proceed.
