A school bus carrying 20 students from Mangum Elementary School overturned on Johnson Mill Road in Durham on December 1, 2025, resulting in 10 students being hospitalized with minor injuries.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol cited the driver for failing to maintain lane control after the bus veered off the road while navigating a curve, overcorrected, and flipped, hitting a tree.
The bus was traveling southbound near South Lowell Road when the crash occurred.
Emergency crews responded, and students were transported to hospitals including Duke Regional, Duke, and UNC Hospitals.
All students were later released to their families after being reunited at a pickup site on Roxboro and Patrick Roads.
The crash site was closed for nearly two hours.
Durham Public Schools Superintendent Anthony Lewis confirmed the incident is under investigation, with no serious injuries reported.
Parents described the event as traumatic, with some children now hesitant to ride school buses.
