The Red Cross warns of increased winter home fire risks and urges smoke alarm safety.
The American Red Cross has issued a holiday fire safety advisory, warning of increased home fire risks during winter due to decorations, candles, and heating devices.
It urges families to install smoke alarms on every level, including near sleeping areas, test them monthly, replace batteries yearly, and retire alarms older than 10 years.
The Red Cross advises against using candles when oxygen is in use and warns to keep flammable materials away from heat sources.
Since October 2014, its Home Fire Campaign has helped save at least 2,519 lives through education, escape planning, and free alarm installations in high-risk communities.
