Over 1.5 million older adults in the UK may spend Christmas Day alone, with 11% eating dinner by themselves and 5% having no contact with others, according to Age UK’s polling of over 2,600 people aged 65 and older conducted in late October and early November 2025.
The charity warns of a “crisis hidden in plain sight,” with public figures like Dame Joanna Lumley, Dame Judi Dench, Brian Cox, and Miriam Margolyes joining a campaign to combat loneliness.
Age UK reports volunteers made over 70,000 minutes of calls during last year’s Christmas week and urges donations to sustain services like phone calls, coffee mornings, and festive lunches.
The organization stresses that no one should face winter alone.
