New Zealand's new mandatory building inspection rules, effective since August 2025, have led to strong results, with 66 of 67 Building Consent Authorities meeting the target of completing 80% of inspections within three working days.
Data from the third quarter shows 97.3% of 67,000 inspections were completed within that timeframe, including 57,900 on the same day requested.
Building consent applications were processed within the legal 20-day window 95.7% of the time, up from 93% last year.
The government credits improved transparency and accountability from public reporting for the gains, as delays cost projects about $400 per day.
A standardized reporting system is being rolled out, with full implementation expected by July 2026.
