Maine police safely removed historic unexploded cannonballs from museums, marking the state’s largest such recovery.
On December 1, 2025, the Maine State Police Bomb Squad safely removed multiple unexploded War of 1812-era black powder cannonballs from the Castine Historical Society and Wilson Museum after staff discovered them during a collection review.
The bomb squad recovered two cannonballs from Castine, a third potentially hazardous one, and about two dozen from the Wilson Museum, marking the largest removal of unexploded ordnance from a museum collection in Maine history.
All items will be detonated safely.
No injuries occurred, and officials emphasized the risks of handling historical explosives.
A winter storm warning was also in effect for parts of Downeast Maine.
