Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of the late drug kingpin "El Chapo," pleaded guilty in December 2024 to U.S. drug trafficking and continuing criminal enterprise charges, admitting to overseeing the production and distribution of large quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana, and fentanyl into the United States as part of the Sinaloa cartel's "Chapitos" faction.
His brother Ovidio Guzman Lopez had previously entered a plea deal.
The brothers were arrested in July 2024 in Texas alongside longtime cartel leader Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, sparking increased violence in Mexico's Sinaloa state.
