Jamal Borhot, 35, convicted of ISIS terrorism charges after fighting and recruiting for the group in Syria.
Jamal Taan Borhot, 35, of Calgary, has been found guilty on three terrorism charges for joining ISIS in Syria from May 2013 to April 2014, according to Alberta’s Court of King’s Bench.
Justice Corina Dario ruled he trained with, fought for, and commanded ISIS forces, produced propaganda, and attempted to recruit others, citing evidence including intercepted calls, travel documents, and social media messages.
Despite denying travel during police interviews, Borhot was taken into custody after the verdict, with a sentencing hearing set for January 16, 2026.
His cousin, Hussein Borhot, previously received a 12-year sentence for similar charges.
The case, which began in 2020, faced delays over disclosure issues and defense challenges, but the court upheld the charges.
