Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi sentenced in absentia to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban for anti-state propaganda.
Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, 65, has been sentenced in absentia to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban on charges of "propaganda activities" against the state, his lawyer said.
The ruling follows his recent international promotion of *It Was Just an Accident*, a Palme d'Or-winning film and France’s official Oscar submission for Best International Feature.
Panahi, who previously faced imprisonment and a filmmaking ban for criticizing Iran’s government, has continued creating work under restrictions, including smuggling his 2011 documentary *This Is Not a Film* into Cannes inside a cake.
He was briefly arrested in 2023 during protests and released after a hunger strike.
His legal team plans to appeal the latest sentence.
El cineasta iraní Jafar Panahi fue sentenciado en ausencia a un año de prisión y a dos años de prohibición de viajar por propaganda contra el Estado.
