flag A Florida police sergeant was critically injured in a shootout with a suspect armed with an AK-47 during a neighbor dispute.

A 27-year veteran Port St. Lucie police sergeant, Erik LeVasseur, was shot twice in the face during a December 2, 2025, gunfight with a 32-year-old suspect, Frankie Salvatore Riccio, who was armed with an AK-47-type rifle. The incident began as a neighbor dispute with mental health concerns, prompting six officers to respond around 6:08 p.m. at SW Lake Park Drive. After Riccio opened fire, officers returned fire, killing him at the scene. LeVasseur was rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition. The other five officers, including two trainees, were unharmed. Shell casings were collected, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent review. Police confirmed no ongoing threat to the public.
