Dale Caldwell, New Jersey’s first male lieutenant governor, named secretary of state, will oversee elections and economic growth starting Jan. 20, 2026.
Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill has named Lt. Gov.-elect Dale Caldwell to serve as New Jersey’s secretary of state, combining the two roles for the first time since 2010.
Caldwell, a Democrat and former college president, will oversee elections, business regulation, tourism, and cultural affairs starting January 20, 2026.
A former school board member, deputy commissioner, and pastor, he will also co-chair Sherrill’s transition team.
Sherrill, a former U.S. congresswoman, defeated Republican Jack Ciatarelli by 14 points in November to succeed term-limited Gov.
Phil Murphy.
Caldwell, the state’s first male lieutenant governor, plans to strengthen election integrity and support economic development ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Sherrill will announce more Cabinet appointments in the coming weeks.
