Archbishop Gilbert Garcera elected head of Philippines' Catholic bishops, breaking tradition and promoting inclusivity.
Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa has been elected president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, succeeding Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David.
Chosen during the CBCP’s July 5 plenary assembly, Garcera breaks tradition by not appointing outgoing vice president Bishop Mylo Hubert Vergara as his successor—the first time since 2011.
Known for promoting synodality, Garcera published a 271-page document in January 2024 advocating inclusivity and pastoral sensitivity, especially toward individuals with same-sex attractions, while upholding Church teaching on marriage.
He will serve until November 30, 2027, with Archbishop Julius Tonel of Zamboanga as vice president, leading the Church’s national and international efforts and responding to challenges like corruption and natural disasters.
