Tod Penberthy, a 67-year-old experienced cyclist with 45 years of riding, was seriously injured Saturday during the Taupō Enduro race when struck by a ute’s wing mirror on Poihipi Road, estimated to be traveling 80–90 km/h.
He sustained broken ribs, road rash, and a deep arm laceration requiring surgery.
Transported by event ambulance at 9:53 a.m. to Taupō Hospital in serious condition, he was later airlifted to Tauranga Hospital.
The female driver, towing a trailer, slowed to avoid another vehicle and misjudged the distance, causing the collision.
She returned to apologize.
Police were notified at 10:15 a.m. and are investigating; no charges have been filed.
Penberthy, a former cop and firefighter, said he was wearing safety gear and riding on the far left, making the crash unexpected despite precautions.
