82% of UK drivers support mandatory alcohol interlocks for drink drivers, amid rising safety concerns.
A new RAC survey of UK drivers finds 82% support using alcohol interlocks, or "alcolocks," to prevent drink-driving, with 71% backing mandatory installation for those caught over the legal limit.
The devices, already used in countries like the US, Australia, and the Netherlands, block a vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected.
The survey, based on 2,395 respondents from April 4–21, 2025, also found 12% admitted to driving after drinking, and 260 people died in alcohol-related crashes in 2023.
RAC officials say public support indicates current penalties are insufficient and urge the government to include alcolocks in its upcoming Road Safety Strategy.
