Southfield School in Hatfield will expand to 126 places by Sept. 2026, adding classrooms and parking to ease special needs education shortages.
Southfield School in Hatfield, a special needs school for children aged four to 11, will expand from 100 to 126 pupil places starting September 1, 2026, after Hertfordshire County Council approved the project.
The £1.71 million expansion includes a new modular building with classrooms and sensory spaces, plus 12 additional parking bays.
The move aims to address ongoing shortages in specialist education, as over 700 children with Education, Health and Care Plans remain without placements, including nearly 500 awaiting spots for severe learning difficulties.
Council officials warn prolonged delays risk legal action.
