Rio Tinto to spend $50M on new facility at Tiwai Point to process toxic waste for reuse, creating jobs and supporting environmental restoration.
Rio Tinto plans to invest $50 million in a new on-site facility at its Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in New Zealand to process spent cell liner, a toxic byproduct of aluminium production.
The facility, set to begin construction in Q2 2026, will treat SCL locally for reuse in the global cement industry, reducing reliance on overseas processing.
It supports a long-term remediation plan co-developed with Ngāi Tahu, aiming to safely manage legacy materials and restore the site.
The project will create 20 construction and six operational jobs, follows over 36,000 tonnes of SCL already exported for reuse since January 2024, and has secured all necessary consents.
