Nurses at New Zealand’s Crest Hospital strike over pay and union access, marking the first strike in its 121-year history.
Staff at Crest Hospital in Palmerston North, New Zealand, are striking on December 2, 2025, over the hospital’s refusal to allow lower-paid workers like orderlies and administrators to join their union’s collective bargaining group.
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) says the hospital offers higher pay only if staff forgo union membership or meet performance goals, resulting in pay gaps of up to $7 per hour compared to public hospital workers.
The strike, starting at 2pm and ending at 4pm, highlights concerns over fairness and equal representation, especially for roles like anaesthetic technicians whose union access is restricted.
A mediation session is set for December 3, with a second strike planned for December 12.
The action marks the first in the hospital’s 121-year history.
