New plans to expand a historic Cumbria cottage face opposition over heritage and visual concerns.
New plans have been submitted to expand Brandlehow Cottage in Derwentwater, Cumbria, following the 2023 rejection of a prior proposal to demolish and rebuild the historic property.
The revised application, by Dr. Jag Chana and his wife Kate, seeks ground and first-floor extensions to create a family home, arguing the current cottage is too deteriorated to preserve and that the new design supports the Lake District’s World Heritage Site.
However, Borrowdale Parish Council and conservation groups oppose the project, citing concerns over its scale, materials, visual impact, and potential disruption to the “Teddy in the Window” tradition.
Critics also question the validity of heritage assessments tied to an earlier, rejected plan.
The final decision rests with the national park authority.
