Four Oxfordshire councils rejected £230K in CCTV upgrade funds, risking reallocation to frontline policing by Dec. 19, 2025.
Four Oxfordshire councils—Oxford City, Cherwell, South Oxfordshire, and Vale of White Horse—have reportedly declined funding from Thames Valley’s Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber to upgrade CCTV systems, despite offers totaling up to £230,713.
The initiative, aimed at modernizing surveillance, extending hours, and improving police coordination, faces a December 19, 2025, deadline, with systems set to launch by April 2026.
West Oxfordshire is the only council to accept the offer.
South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse deny rejecting the proposal, stating they remain in discussions.
Oxford City and Cherwell did not comment.
Barber warned funds may be redirected to frontline policing if councils do not participate, amid ongoing concerns about public safety following recent decisions allowing street lighting reductions.
