China launches 1,200-kW turboprop engine to advance drones, aviation, and low-altitude economy.
China has launched the ATP120, a domestically developed 1,200-kilowatt turboprop engine by Aero Engine Corp of China, to boost its low-altitude economy and cargo drone industry.
Designed for general aviation, trainers, and reconnaissance drones, the engine features modular construction, high-altitude capability, and adaptability to hybrid or hydrogen fuel.
It supports aircraft up to 16 tons with two units and aims to reduce operating costs and emissions.
Two private drone companies have committed to using it, with a planned maiden flight in 2026.
The engine fills a key domestic gap and aligns with China’s goal of expanding general aviation, projected to reach 13,000 aircraft and require nearly 10,000 engines by 2045.
