Chief Adviser Yunus promises justice for 145 military personnel wronged under past regimes, citing torture, disappearances, and wrongful dismissals.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus pledged justice for Bangladesh's armed forces personnel who faced discrimination and abuse under previous administrations, following a report by a committee chaired by Lt Gen (retd) Abdul Hafiz.
The inquiry reviewed 733 applications from retired and dismissed officers between 2009 and August 2024, recommending redress for 145, including promotions, back pay, normal retirement, and reinstatement for some.
Findings revealed enforced disappearances lasting up to eight years, fabricated charges, torture, wrongful dismissals, and the killing of a retired officer in a false militancy case, with his family imprisoned without trial.
Officers punished for speaking out against government inaction after the 2009 BDR massacre and those dismissed for religious practices or questioning leadership were also highlighted.
Yunus called the findings “truly frightening” and affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing these injustices.
