Taiwan fined a man for drug-impaired driving of a mini electric scooter, amid poor air quality and cross-strait tensions.
Police in New Taipei City issued Taiwan’s first fine for driving a mini electric two-wheeler under the influence of drugs, after a 58-year-old man turned himself in, surrendered drugs and a pipe, and tested positive.
The vehicle, which requires no license but needs plates and insurance, is limited to 25 km/h and weighs at least 40kg without a battery.
Under Taiwan’s traffic law, impaired operation of such vehicles carries a NT$1,200 to NT$2,400 fine and vehicle impoundment.
Meanwhile, air quality across Taiwan remained poor, with 27 stations reporting unhealthy levels, prompting health advisories for sensitive groups.
China also intensified diplomatic pressure over Japanese comments on Taiwan, restricting cross-strait interactions and urging UN officials to uphold the one-China principle.
Despite tensions, Taipei confirmed plans to terminate a land contract to allow Nvidia to establish a Taiwan headquarters in Beitou Shilin Technology Park, with a deal expected before the Lunar New Year.
