Shalina Sayer, a wrestler from Karnataka University and the Siddi community with African roots, won bronze in the women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the 2025 Khelo India University Games in Bharatpur, defeating Bhanu of Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya 2-1.
Her victory, achieved after a three-day train journey, marks her first KIUG medal and follows a previous bronze at an All-India University competition.
Representing a historically marginalized Scheduled Tribe community, Shalina’s success highlights the inclusivity of India’s sports initiatives.
She credited fellow Siddi athlete Sushil Motesh Kambrekar as an inspiration and said her achievements have earned her respect in her community, with no personal experience of racial discrimination.
