A rare pygmy sperm whale calf was found stranded, injured, and euthanized on Anglesey, UK, on Nov. 27, 2025.
A rare pygmy sperm whale calf, believed to be a recently weaned female measuring 1.7 meters, was found stranded and injured on Trearddur Bay, Anglesey, on November 27, 2025. Despite emergency response efforts by coastguard teams and marine experts, the calf’s condition worsened due to trauma from reef stranding and possible predation. Officials determined survival was unlikely and opted for euthanasia to prevent further suffering. The whale was sent for a necropsy to investigate the cause of death. Pygmy sperm whales are extremely rare in UK waters, with fewer than 20 strandings recorded. A separate porpoise carcass was found on Llanddwyn Beach, though it had been there for some time.
