Ohio approves $40M for first responders’ PTSD care, pending governor’s signature.
Ohio lawmakers have approved $40 million in funding for a state PTSD fund to support first responders with job-related mental health injuries, effective July 1, 2026.
The fund, created in 2020 but previously unfunded, will help cover lost wages and medical costs for firefighters, police, and EMTs disabled by PTSD.
While the appropriation is seen as a major step, no formal application or claims process exists yet, and officials say developing a working system is the next crucial task.
The move addresses a gap in Ohio’s workers’ compensation program, which does not cover mental health injuries.
The bill now awaits Governor Mike DeWine’s signature.
