A New Zealand court invalidated a will change due to coercion, restoring the original that favored Johan de Rooy’s siblings.
A New Zealand High Court ruled that Johan de Rooy, a terminally ill man with Asperger’s and mental health issues, was unduly influenced when he changed his will in 2021 to leave his estate to his ex-wife, Alaine Coleman.
The judge found the new will invalid due to coercion, noting Coleman’s dominant role, lack of independent legal advice, and a questionable mental capacity assessment she arranged.
The original will, which left assets to de Rooy’s siblings, was restored.
