The European Central Bank has warned major eurozone banks of heightened risks from U.S. dollar market volatility, urging them to strengthen capital and liquidity amid concerns over potential disruptions to dollar funding, especially if emergency swap lines with the Federal Reserve were reduced.
The ECB highlighted banks’ heavy reliance on dollar-denominated assets and loans, totaling nearly 1.4 trillion euros, and stressed the need for greater preparedness despite existing safeguards.
At the same time, the EU is shifting toward a defense-focused economy under the ReArm Europe/Readiness 2030 plan, aiming to mobilize up to 800 billion euros in defense investments to boost strategic autonomy and military readiness, marking a major pivot from prior priorities like green energy and digitalization.
