Brisbane Airport trials routing night flights over Moreton Bay to reduce noise, with no safety changes needed.
Brisbane Airport is testing a trial to reduce nighttime aircraft noise by encouraging departures over Moreton Bay, using voluntary audio alerts for pilots under specific weather and staffing conditions.
The trial, which won’t change safety rules allowing up to a five-knot tailwind, aims to increase flights over water—currently 63% between 10pm and 6am—potentially leading to a permanent change.
It may also shorten taxi times for international flights.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority confirmed no formal approval is needed, as safety remains under air traffic control and pilot discretion.
