Timmins council approves closing a downtown laneway due to loitering, planning community-focused redevelopment by 2026.
Timmins city council has approved the temporary closure of a downtown laneway between Spruce and Pine streets, citing six years of rising loitering that prompted businesses to install security measures.
The space, no longer used for commercial purposes, will be reimagined through public input, with ideas including picnic areas, expanded senior and youth services, and community art.
A mural was completed in September 2024 as part of revitalization efforts.
Final redevelopment plans, including safety input from police and fire departments, will be presented to council by April 2026.
