Portland sailor Ronnie Simpson, after nearly dying in a storm at sea, plans to reattempt the 2027 solo around-the-world race.
Portland sailor Ronnie Simpson, a veteran of the Iraq War, is preparing to reattempt the 2027 Global Solo Challenge, a solo around-the-world sailing race, after nearly dying in February 2024 when a storm severely damaged his boat 700 miles off Argentina.
After enduring over 100 days of extreme conditions, isolation, and sleep deprivation, he was rescued and now plans to sail again from Portland aboard his Class 40 boat, Koloa Maoli.
The race, lasting four to nine months, demands constant vigilance, mental resilience, and reliance on solar-powered autopilot, with minimal human contact and freeze-dried food.
Simpson describes the experience as “type 2 fun”—painful in the moment but deeply rewarding—and sees the race as a journey of personal redemption and survival.
