NYPD officer shot in face survives shootout in Brooklyn; suspect died from injuries.
NYPD officer Sharjeel Waris, 25, survived being shot in the face with birdshot during a shootout in Brownsville, Brooklyn, on November 29, 2025, after responding to a homicide where 41-year-old Leroy Wallace was found dead.
Waris, a four-year veteran, was guarding evidence when suspect Dashawn Larode, 24, opened fire from his apartment, then barricaded himself inside.
Waris returned fire, wounding Larode, who died from his injuries.
Police found no shell casings in the apartment and used a drone to confirm the suspect was dead.
Waris was treated for a minor facial wound at Brookdale University Hospital and was reported in good spirits.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised his bravery.
The motive remains under investigation.
