Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged the 10th National Assembly to pass the Women’s Special Seats Bill, which would reserve 182 seats for women in federal and state legislatures, calling it a historic chance to advance gender parity and strengthen democracy.
Speaking at a dinner in Abuja with top lawmakers, she emphasized the bill’s progress to third reading, highlighted global examples of inclusive governance, and warned of rising insecurity threatening children’s education.
Lawmakers, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, expressed support, with Akpabio pledging backing for the bill and proposing harsher penalties for kidnapping.
