Luigi Mangione faces state court over CEO's killing, with key evidence under scrutiny.
Luigi Mangione, 27, will appear in state court on Monday for his first public hearing since September, when terrorism charges in the Nov. 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson were dismissed.
The shooting in Manhattan sparked a nationwide manhunt leading to his arrest at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
The hearing will determine which evidence is admissible, including testimony from arresting officers and contents of a backpack seized without a warrant, allegedly containing a 3D-printed gun, silencer, electronics, and a red notebook with alleged confession notes.
Defense attorneys argue the search was unlawful and seek to exclude the notebook’s contents, warning of jury bias, and question whether Mangione was properly informed of his rights.
Meanwhile, separate federal charges carrying the death penalty are pending, with the next hearing set for January 2026.
