The Caledonian Sleeper adds a Birmingham stop on three Highland routes starting January 2025.
The Caledonian Sleeper, a UK overnight train service dating to 1873, has added a stop in Birmingham on three Highland routes—London to Fort William, Aberdeen, and Inverness—starting January 2025, marking its first major route change in 30 years.
The service, operating from London Euston at 9:15pm, now offers travelers a scenic, direct connection between England’s Midlands and Scotland’s Highlands, with return journeys arriving in Birmingham early morning.
Cabins for two start at $500 and include en suite bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and charging options.
The train remains one of only two overnight services in the UK, with lowland routes to Glasgow and Edinburgh unchanged.
Meanwhile, Virgin Trains has approval to use a new East London depot, potentially enabling a future London–Paris rail link by 2030, and in Australia, train enthusiasts can drive a solar-powered train on a restored line in Byron Bay.
